At first glance, there doesn’t figure to be a whole lot of reason for fans outside of the Seattle area to care much about the Mariners series with the lowly Kansas City Royals this weekend.
But for those keeping a close eye on the Cy Young Award race, this series will be an interesting one to watch.
Felix Hernandez, the Mariners ace and Cy Young candidate, will take the mound against the Royals on Friday looking for his 13th win of the season. And on Sunday, Kansas City ace Zack Greinke will look to further his argument for the coveted pitcher’s award in the series finale.

Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com is reporting that running back Edgerrin James has signed a one-year, $2 million deal with the Seattle Seahawks.
The Cardinals released James last season with year remaining on the deal. If true, it’s an interesting move for Seattle and leaves you wondering who is the odd man out. Florio is speculating that it could be T.J. Duckett, which makes some sense because Edge could take over as your short yardage guy. Folks in the national media have questioned the Seahawks depth at running back for awhile, so apparently those concerns have been confirmed with this move.

The Mariners have had the biggest turnaround in the Major Leagues this season, spurred by one familiar offensive weapon and two newcomers.
Right fielder Ichiro Suzuki, center fielder Franklin Gutierrez and first baseman Russell Branyan have been so instrumental in the team’s resurgence on the field that they have been selected by the Mariners organization as its nominees for the MLB Hank Aaron Award.
The Hank Aaron Award, presented by Sharp, is awarded annually to the best overall offensive performer in each league, with each club having three nominees. This is the seventh consecutive year that fans have had a voice in selecting the award winners.

Nine-time Pro Bowl left tackle Walter Jones has left Seahawks practice early with an apparent back injury.
The 35-year-old linchpin to Seattle’s offensive line for the past decade was practicing Monday for the third time since training camp began July 31. He took part in one series with the starting offense when he left the field in pain.
He stood and kneeled next to a trainer while wincing and holding his back for a few moments. He eventually summoned the trainer to escort him into team headquarters.

Everyone has seen the gaudy numbers T.J. Houshmandzadeh put up in Cincinnati, seen the pony tail and the tattoos, even heard the interviews where he sounds like he might just be another overconfident receiver.
But there’s another side to the Seahawks’ biggest offseason acquisition, a side far fewer people have seen, but that is more worthy of the praise Houshmandzadeh will receive for what he does on the field this season.
At some point this season, Houshmandzadeh will do something that will make 67,000 Seahawk fans stand up and cheer. But moments like one a week and a half ago at the University of Washington, those are why professional athletes sometimes are really worth looking up to.

Name the American League player with the most three-hit games this season.
If you guessed Major League hits-leader Ichiro Suzuki, you’re wrong — but close.
It’s Mariners second baseman Jose Lopez.
On a night every Mariners starter had at least one hit, Lopez had three, leading Seattle and rookie left-hander Lucas French to an 11-6 victory over the Royals before 27,805 at Kauffman Stadium.

Brandon Roy has become the face of the franchise, and the Portland Trail Blazers want to keep it that way.
Going into the final year of his rookie contract, Roy and the team are on the verge of agreeing to a long-term extension, The Oregonian reported on Tuesday.
“We’ve had very productive discussions recently and are optimistic we will reach a deal soon,” Roy’s agent, Bob Myers said, according to the newspaper. According to the report, Roy has been seeking a four-year deal with a player option for the fifth year at a maximum $82 million.

It didn’t require a trade, but the Mariners get an offensive shot in the arm on Tuesday night when they open a three-game series against the Royals.
For the first time since June 28, manager Don Wakamatsu will fill out a lineup card that has Adrian Beltre’s name on it. Beltre had a bone spur removed from his left shoulder on June 30 and has recovered faster than expected. The original prediction was that he would miss six to eight weeks. His return should bolster a lineup that has had problems scoring runs. A healthy Beltre is capable of big things.
