Battered with broken ribs and humbled by a 2-4 start, Matt Hasselbeck sure could use some good news right now.
This season has been so ragged for the Seahawks, the quarterback nodded and joked of last weekend’s bye: “That’s a good matchup for us.”
Hasselbeck went to the Pro Bowl three times and the Super Bowl once with Bobby Engram as his wide receiver for most of this decade. They spent summer vacations together in Central Washington working out as their families played.
Then Engram left for Kansas City in free agency last spring.

Brandon Roy scored 22 points to lead the Portland Trail Blazers to a 113-93 victory over the Phoenix Suns on Thursday night in the final preseason game for both teams.
LaMarcus Aldridge, whose 5-year contract extension was announced earlier in the day, and Travis Outlaw both added 17 points for the Trail Blazers (4-4).
Steve Nash paced Phoenix (4-4) with 14 points and seven assists while Amare Stoudemire and reserve Jared Dudley both added 13 points.
Nash, who grew up in Victoria, drew the loudest cheers from the crowd of 19,700, many of whom wore Suns jerseys. He tossed an autographed shoe into the crowd when the game was out of reach in the fourth quarter.

Seahawks have seven first downs, rush for franchise record-low 14 yards
One week after a near-flawless offensive display, the Seattle Seahawks were historic in their haplessness.
In Sunday’s 27-3 loss to the Arizona Cardinals at Qwest Field, the Seahawks managed a mere 14 rushing yards. It was the lowest single-game rushing total in the team’s 34-year history.
Seattle had just 128 yards of total offense, and 42 of those yards came on one play — a fake-punt pass completion from punter Jon Ryan to tight end John Carlson. The 128 yards matched the seventh-lowest total in franchise history.
The Seahawks finished with seven first downs, tying for the sixth fewest in team history. And Seattle failed to get a rushing first down, the fourth time that has ever happened.
All this offensive futility came one week after the Seahawks routed Jacksonville 41-0 with 379 yards of offense. On that day, Seattle looked like a probable contender in the NFC West.
On Sunday, the Seahawks simply looked feeble, particularly on offense.

Woke up Sunday never expecting to see the Angels on television right after sunrise services, or these unexpected college football story lines:
Oregon is 3-0 and leading the Pacific 10 Conference. That’s right, the program you switched off after LeGarrette Blount’s punch the Thursday before Labor Day has won five consecutive games and suddenly controls its fate in the race for at least one of this year’s Rose Bowls.
The Ducks came to Los Angeles without their starting quarterback and two starting cornerbacks and dumped UCLA’s Bruins, 24-10. Oregon is more resilient than Flubber, yet the Ducks get no bounce? USC, which had a bye, moved up one spot to No. 6 Sunday in the Associated Press rankings. Oregon stayed stuck on No. 13.

The lingering debate about the starting lineup and the nostalgia surrounding Wednesday night’s exhibition game at Memorial Coliseum have provided a convenient distraction for the Trail Blazers at a time when a more pertinent issue has surfaced.
Coach Nate McMillan has emphasized defense throughout the preseason — and, really, for the better part of the last 13 months — but three games into the exhibition schedule, he’s still searching for the intensity, execution and desire required to catapult this team into becoming a defensive force.
“That is where I think I’m most disappointed — in the commitment there and … focus,” McMillan said, referring to his team’s defensive play thus far. “Not only have we talked about it, we know that that is where we need to improve and part of (practice) was working on that. The guys gotta commit to that. It can’t be a sometimes thing.”

Seattle wide receivers T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Nate Burleson combine to catch 11 passes for 175 yards and four touchdowns
There was no frustration this time around for T.J. Houshmandzadeh.
No postgame press conference remarks about how he should be getting the ball more. About how he is frustrated that he isn’t contributing more, especially as his team loses games.
Nope. On this Sunday Houshmandzadeh was all smiles following the Seahawks’ 41-0 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Houshmandzadeh, the Seahawks’ marquee offseason signing, caught five passes for 77 yards and his first two touchdowns as a Seahawk. Combined with the six-catch, 98-yard day turned in by Nate Burleson, it was just the kind of receiver production the Seahawks were hoping for when they signed Houshmandzadeh away from Cincinnati.
“Obviously winning solves a lot of problems, cures a lot of emotions you might have that aren’t right,” Houshmandzadeh said.
Houshmandzadeh scored his first touchdown in the second quarter to give the Seahawks a 13-0 lead in what had up to that point been a tight defensive struggle. A player who has frequently said he can always get open in one-on-one coverage, Houshmandzadeh did just that with the help of a convincing pump fake from Matt Hasselbeck, and scored on a 34-yard pass.

The Seahawks are 1-3 and staring at the prospect of a second consecutive season of irrelevance.
But quarterback Matt Hasselbeck appears ready to return, and the Seahawks have two home games that add up to one big chance to get back to .500.
Is this Seahawks season sinking or can it be salvaged?
Is Seattle hopeless or can it be hopeful?
Well, that depends on your perspective. Are you the kind of person who puckers at the sight of a certain yellow citrus fruit or the type who imagines a tall glass of lemonade?

Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck is out with a broken rib, one of seven starters missing for the Seattle Seahawks against the Chicago Bears.
The 34-year-old did not practice all week after getting hurt last weekend at San Francisco. Backup Seneca Wallace made the 13th start of his seven-year career for Seattle on Sunday.
Nine-time Pro Bowl left tackle Walter Jones remained out following knee surgery last month. Middle linebacker Lofa Tatupu, cornerback Josh Wilson, offensive tackle Sean Locklear, fullback Justin Griffith and outside linebacker Leroy Hill were also inactive for Seattle.
