The Seattle Mariners have been shuffling the deck, but it looks like they’ll keep their ace.
On the eve of exchanging salary figures for arbitration, right-hander Felix Hernandez has agreed to a multiyear contract with the team, pending a physical, a source with direct knowledge of the talks told ESPN.com’s Keith Law on Monday.
If the final parts of the negotiations continue as expected, Hernandez will sign a five-year deal in the neighborhood of $80 million, sources told ESPN The Magazine’s Buster Olney.
Hernandez made a case for a big payday with a 19-5 record and a 2.46 ERA in 2009. He had earned $3.8 million in his first year of arbitration eligibility.

Almost every Mariners pitcher can say center fielder Franklin Gutierrez has had their back at some juncture this season.
Line drives destined to become extra-base hits become outs. Runners that might have scored become runners left on base. And ERAs are lower than they would have been if some of those would-be hits had not been caught in a gap or over a fence.
Indeed, Gutierrez has made a lot of friends in his first season with the Mariners.
“He’s unbelievable,” right-hander Felix Hernandez said. “You feel comfortable anytime a ball is hit in the direction of center field. He’s so quick getting to balls.”

As if an off-and-on left hamstring problem wasn’t enough for Mariners shortstop Jack Wilson to deal with, he can add a bruised right heel to his injury woes.
Wilson was on crutches on Wednesday, one day after being forced from Seattle’s game against Chicago after stepping awkwardly on first base while running out a bunt base hit. Wilson is day to day, manger Don Wakamatsu said.
“I don’t know how long it’s going to be,” Wakamatsu said. “We’ll just reevaluate it every day.”
Wilson has struggled at the plate since coming over from Pittsburgh in a July 29 trade. He’s hitting .224 in 31 games and also missed 10 games in mid-August with a Grade 1 hamstring tear.

A 30-year career that started as the Mariners’ traveling secretary and included a four-month stint as the organization’s interim general manager last season ended on Tuesday for longtime front-office executive Lee Pelekoudas, who submitted his resignation, effective immediately, to “pursue other career opportunities.”
“Thirty years in one place is a long time, and I want to try something different in a new place,” Pelekoudas said. “This is something that has been going through my mind for a while, and it’s the best time to do it.
“This gives both side some flexibility,” he added. “I am going to try to stay in baseball, and it gives me a head start for finding another job and gives the Mariners the opportunity to start looking for my replacement.”

Ken Griffey Jr. had an MRI exam on his left knee Tuesday afternoon to determine the extent of the discomfort that has kept him out of the lineup for the past five games.
The results showed inflammation, and Griffey should be ready to resume action on Thursday night when the Mariners open a four-game series against the Athletics in Oakland.
“He’s had some pain in this particular spot and he hadn’t had it there in a while,” manager Don Wakamatsu said. “It just showed up again.”

The first stint first baseman Mike Carp had with the Mariners this season was more of a get-acquainted period than anything else.
He had eight at-bats during the 16 days he spent with the team in June and July, playing in five games and getting three hits and one RBI in very limited duty.
Carp returned to Triple-A Tacoma on July 4, took a couple of days to regroup, and then got his swing back, helping the Rainiers get back into the Pacific Coast League pennant race. The race goes on without Carp as he rejoined the Mariners on Tuesday when big league rosters could be expanded.

Doug Fister went from facing one of the worst teams in the American League to facing one of the best. Funny, then, how his quality of performance made the same polar progression from one start to the next.
Fister had the worst outing of his career against the light-hitting Royals on Thursday. But on Tuesday against the Angels, who roughed up the Mariners a night earlier, the rookie right-hander played the part of giant killer.
Fister went 7 1/3 innings, holding the Angels to one run on five hits in his longest and best effort to date, allowing the Mariners to take the second game of a three-game series, 2-1, in front of 18,542 at Safeco Field.

At first glance, there doesn’t figure to be a whole lot of reason for fans outside of the Seattle area to care much about the Mariners series with the lowly Kansas City Royals this weekend.
But for those keeping a close eye on the Cy Young Award race, this series will be an interesting one to watch.
Felix Hernandez, the Mariners ace and Cy Young candidate, will take the mound against the Royals on Friday looking for his 13th win of the season. And on Sunday, Kansas City ace Zack Greinke will look to further his argument for the coveted pitcher’s award in the series finale.

The Mariners have had the biggest turnaround in the Major Leagues this season, spurred by one familiar offensive weapon and two newcomers.
Right fielder Ichiro Suzuki, center fielder Franklin Gutierrez and first baseman Russell Branyan have been so instrumental in the team’s resurgence on the field that they have been selected by the Mariners organization as its nominees for the MLB Hank Aaron Award.
The Hank Aaron Award, presented by Sharp, is awarded annually to the best overall offensive performer in each league, with each club having three nominees. This is the seventh consecutive year that fans have had a voice in selecting the award winners.

Name the American League player with the most three-hit games this season.
If you guessed Major League hits-leader Ichiro Suzuki, you’re wrong — but close.
It’s Mariners second baseman Jose Lopez.
On a night every Mariners starter had at least one hit, Lopez had three, leading Seattle and rookie left-hander Lucas French to an 11-6 victory over the Royals before 27,805 at Kauffman Stadium.
