Hawaii’s Kurtz suspended six games

Posted by GameSetMatch on 12th November 2009

Hawaii center Douglas Kurtz must sit out the Rainbow Warriors’ first six games because he played three games in a professional league in his native Brazil in 2007.

Coach Bob Nash said on Wednesday that he decided against appealing the NCAA ruling so that Kurtz and the rest of the team won’t have to deal with the uncertainty of his status.

The 7-footer transferred to Hawaii from Marshalltown Community College in Iowa.

Hawaii opens its season Friday at its own Rainbow Classic against Southern Utah. Kurtz will be eligible to play for the Warriors against Lamar on Dec. 6.

Oregon Ducks taking flight

Posted by GameSetMatch on 5th November 2009

By any standard, Chip Kelly’s rise to a national darling has been accomplished with racehorse speed. Just three years ago, he was the offensive coordinator at New Hampshire, not exactly a typical laboratory for high-tech football.

The Wildcats didn’t have a fullback one year, so he conjured up his version of the spread offense. That decision and the precision that Kelly attaches to his coaching landed him in the Pac-10 catbird’s seat.

Hired as offensive coordinator by Oregon coach Mike Bellotti in 2007, Kelly instantly created a vaunted, chain-moving option attack. The Ducks’ quest for a national championship was scuttled that year when quarterback Dennis Dixon blew out his knee, but they’re back in the national picture now in Kelly’s first year as head coach.

Ducks are under control

Posted by GameSetMatch on 14th October 2009

Woke up Sunday never expecting to see the Angels on television right after sunrise services, or these unexpected college football story lines:

Oregon is 3-0 and leading the Pacific 10 Conference. That’s right, the program you switched off after LeGarrette Blount’s punch the Thursday before Labor Day has won five consecutive games and suddenly controls its fate in the race for at least one of this year’s Rose Bowls.

The Ducks came to Los Angeles without their starting quarterback and two starting cornerbacks and dumped UCLA’s Bruins, 24-10. Oregon is more resilient than Flubber, yet the Ducks get no bounce? USC, which had a bye, moved up one spot to No. 6 Sunday in the Associated Press rankings. Oregon stayed stuck on No. 13.
