Mariners can still salvage this mess of a season

True to form, the Mariners appear to have reached the franchise’s traditional point of disengagement with the playoff race — the Memorial Day weekend.

They entered play on the holiday 19-30, third-worst in the American League, fourth worst in major league baseball. While most of MLB settles in for a summer of entertaining daily drama, the Mariners are on the edge of a Seattle baseball tradition — bringing up the kids for four months of extended spring training.

The one silver lining in the tradition is that it allows local fans of the sport to shift attention briefly to the women’s College World Series and the University of Washington. Unlike the M’s, the Huskies play with a swagger and toughness that is the envy of their world.

Seattle Needs Batting

The Seattle Mariners are a team now known for their one-two punch of Felix Hernandez and Cliff Lee. But the batting side is where trouble awaits. Many years ago, Richie Sexson and Adrian Beltre were signed on to help Ichiro Suzuki in the batting department. That didn’t work out too well. Now, Ichiro still has nobody to help him. Ken Griffey Jr. is an all-time great who brings nostalgia to the team, but not much else. Aside from Ichiro, only one other player on the Mariners is even batting .250 this year. Chone Figgins was supposed to be a great acquisition, but his batting average is not even .200 more than mine is.

Cliff Lee has proven to be a great pick-up for Seattle. However, they clearly did not focus enough on batting. Ichiro continues to be his usual great self, but he is climbing up in age. At this rate, by the time he retires, the Mariners won’t have anyone batting over .250. The Mariners need serious batting help. Until then, I hope they will at least find the need to get employees for playoff viewing parties.

Bradley dealing with ‘emotional stress’

Milton Bradley, baseball’s self-described bad guy, has asked his Seattle Mariners for help in dealing with what manager Don Wakamatsu says is “emotional stress” from personal issues.

Wakamatsu and general manager Jack Zduriencik said Wednesday that their fiery slugger is out indefinitely until he receives an outside assessment and a plan to address his issues.

A day earlier, Bradley became angry for striking out twice and Wakamatsu removed him from a close game in the sixth inning because the manager thought he wasn’t fit to play anymore. Bradley left the stadium soon after. Several Mariners players described his mindset Tuesday night as “not good.”

A source told 710 ESPN Radio Seattle Bradley yelled at the umpire from the bench before being told by Wakamatsu to cool it. Wakamatsu said that he would handle the umpire himself. Bradley responded that someone had to say something and that if Wakamatsu wouldn’t, then he would.

According to the source, a few minutes later Bradley walked back over to the skipper and said, “I’m packing my stuff. I’m out of here.” Then he left.

Batum MRI reveals strained shoulder

It has been that kind of season for the Portland Trail Blazers: Hope for the best but expect the worst.

On Wednesday, the oft-injured Blazers got some better-than-expected news about starting forward Nicolas Batum. An MRI showed he strained his right shoulder, and he is questionable for Game 3 of the first-round playoff series between the Blazers and the Suns.

The resilient Blazers claimed the opening game of the series 105-100 in Phoenix but fell back in a 119-90 loss Tuesday night.

Batum injured his shoulder in the second half when he went after a loose ball and appeared to bang his shoulder into Suns guard Steve Nash’s shoulder.

The injury was of particular concern because Batum, the team’s primary perimeter defender, had surgery on the shoulder just before the opener and missed the first 45 games of the season.

Miller scores 31 points as Blazers steal Game 1 from Suns

Brandon Roy or no Brandon Roy, the Portland Trail Blazers give the Phoenix Suns fits.

Game 1 of their first-round playoff series was no exception, and the homecourt advantage the Suns worked so hard to get is history after Portland pulled away over the final 4 1/2 minutes to beat them 105-100 on Sunday night.
Andre Miller scored 15 points in the fourth quarter and tied his career playoff high with 31 points as Portland made Phoenix the only home team to lose in a playoff opener.

“We have done this all season long,” Blazers coach Nate McMillan said.
LaMarcus Aldridge added 22 points and Nicolas Batum 18 for Portland in a game played in the methodical style the Blazers wanted. Jerryd Bayless also had 18 for the Blazers, 10 in the fourth quarter, but missed two free throws with 12.2 seconds left to give Phoenix a shot to tie. Steve Nash’s 3-point try was well short, though, and Miller’s two free throws iced the victory.

Blazers lose, but still get No. 6 seed

Stephen Curry scored 42 points and the depleted Golden State Warriors finished their season with a 122-116 victory over the playoff-bound Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday night.

The short-handed Trail Blazers finished as the No. 6 seed in the Western Conference and will face the third-seeded Phoenix Suns when the first-round series kicks off on Sunday night.

The Suns defeated the Utah Jazz 100-86 in their regular-season finale. Portland is 2-1 against Phoenix this season.

“I think we’ll match up against them well,” said Blazers rookie Jeff Pendergraph, who had a career-high 23 points. “Going into that series — almost any series — we’re going in as underdogs. I think that plays to our favor. We’ve been that the whole season so it’s really nothing new for us.”

Monta Ellis finished with 34 for the Warriors, who were down to just five players because of injuries.

Big Unit a ray of sunshine on cloudy opener

Hopefully when you remember the Mariners 2010 season opener, your recollection of the day stops just before the start of Monday afternoon’s game.

Because for nine innings of a 4-0 loss to Oakland, the Mariners displayed most of the flaws that have haunted them during the first week of the season.

Before another loss gave fans a chance to fret over the team’s 2-6 start, however, a nearly perfect scene provided at least one happy memory for the 45,876 fans that packed Safeco Field.

Randy Johnson, the most dominant pitcher in Mariners history and one of the game’s best left-handers of all time, made a slow walk from center field to a prolonged ovation. As he approached the mound, he first put his hand over his heart, then rolled his left shoulder in a feigned warm up attempt.

The Seattle Mariners have been shuffling the deck, but it looks like they’ll keep their ace.

On the eve of exchanging salary figures for arbitration, right-hander Felix Hernandez has agreed to a multiyear contract with the team, pending a physical, a source with direct knowledge of the talks told ESPN.com’s Keith Law on Monday.

If the final parts of the negotiations continue as expected, Hernandez will sign a five-year deal in the neighborhood of $80 million, sources told ESPN The Magazine’s Buster Olney.

Hernandez made a case for a big payday with a 19-5 record and a 2.46 ERA in 2009. He had earned $3.8 million in his first year of arbitration eligibility.

Seahawks introduce new coach Carroll

Pete Carroll pumped his fist. He talked excitedly and forcefully. He chopped the air with his hands, commanding his new audience.

Even though he had stepped back up into the NFL, he was still in charge — which is exactly why he’s in Seattle now instead of Southern California.

The charismatic Carroll took over as the new coach and executive vice president of the Seahawks on Tuesday, enthusiastically seizing an authority that he says mirrors the latitude USC gave him to restore its dynasty.

“They have embraced my approach … in a manner in which they want to wipe the path clear and give me the clearest opportunity to bring everything that I have to offer. That’s really what I was looking for, the trust and belief from the top of the organization,” Carroll said a day after his public farewell from USC.

“They don’t have an agenda of how they want their football played. They want me to do that. That’s exactly and precisely what I was looking for.”
